Falling into a swift current when a rope breaks
Descending from the mountains, they passed by Hsi Hsiang (Washing Elephant) Lake, Ta-O (Great Mountain) Monastery, Chang Lao (Old Age) Plain, Vairochana Hall and through Hsia Chiang (Gorge) Prefecture. Upon arriving at Yin (Silver) Village, where they were to cross a river, they waited from morning till afternoon before the ferry finally arrived. Everyone had boarded, and the Master deferred to Dharma Master Chieh Ch'en, who boarded first. Handing the latter his bag, the Master was about to board when the rope suddenly broke. The current was swift, so the Master caught the gunwale of the boat with his right hand. Since the boat was overloaded, any slightest imbalance would have caused it to capsize. Therefore, the Master did not move, but remained in the water till the end of the day.
The gatha says:
Grasping the boat afloat in the flow, he crossed over suffering and misery.
His clothes were drenched, his feet were cut, and his blood stained the river.
Arriving finally at Shai Ching Pass, where it was cold and raining,
They went to an inn, but had to stay out in the cold, for Sanghans were not accepted.
