VII. Posture for Meditation

VII.

Idha pana bhikkhave bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā nisīdati pallaṅkaṃ ābhujitvā ujuṃ kāyaṃ paṇidhāya parimukhaṃ satiṃ upaṭṭhapetvā.

O bhikkhus! In this Sāsana a bhikkhu, having gone to a forest, or to the foot of a tree, or to a quiet place, sits down cross-legged with his upper body erect, keeping his attention firmly fixed on the object of meditation.

Here, in the sutta, the Buddha says “sits down cross-legged” because the cross-legged posture is especially suitable for meditation. But any of the four postures diligently adopted will suffice.

Parimukhaṃ means, literally, “in front of his face.” It means he does not look around here and there, but pays attention to his meditation object (of respiration at the nostrils). ed.(注,该段只出现在aimwell版中)

This ends the posture for meditation.
