 “Shakyamuni Buddha said that um everything, all phenomena, is circum circumstantial and the circumstance depends on motivation. 
释迦牟尼佛说诸法皆是因缘而起,而因缘境况则取决于发心(动机)。
So, first of all, I can't stressed enough that we have to tune our motivation. 
所以,首先,我必须反复强调,我们一定要调整自己的发心。
Ah to begin with, me, as the expounder of this teaching, I must tune my own motivation.
从我自己开始,作为这次课程的讲授者,我必须调整自己的发心。
As someone who is uttering these words and, as someone who is giving you the information.  (whispers, inaudible) 
身为这些教法的传递者,提供这些讯息的人
Um my motivation as a teacher or as a medium expressing this te... these teachings should be solely, if possible, based on the bodhicitta.  作为老师或是传播这些教法的媒介,我的发心,如果可能的话,应当是完全基于菩提心。
At least it must come from a good heart of benefiting others. 
至少,应当是出于为了利益他人的善心。
As a teacher I shouldn't be expounding these teachings in order to generate disciples, um fame, material possessions. 
作为老师,我不应当为了广纳门徒而阐述这些教法,或是为了名声、物质财产等动机。
I should not be giving you these teachings even for the sake of impressing you for a moment.
我甚至不应该仅仅是为了给你们留下深刻印象,而讲授这些教法.
And this is what I must remind myself again and again during these few days as I give you ah the teachings of the parting from the four desire. 
这是我在传授远离四种贪执的这几天里,应当一再提醒自己的。

If there's any sign of me going astray ah you can kindly give me some indication. (laughter)  
假如我有任何跑题的迹象,你们可以给我一些善意的提醒。(笑声)
Ah as a listener to this teaching, motivation also is very important.
(你们)作为此教法的听闻者,发心也非常重要。
Depending on what kind of motivation you have, you will also receive or interpret the teachings accordingly. 
你对教法的领受或是解读也将相应地取决于你自己的发心。
If you're here to listen to the teaching to increase your knowledge;
如果你是为了丰富知识而来此听闻教导,
for instance, if you're trying to finish a thesis on mahayana studies
例如,你正在试图完成一篇有关大乘佛法的研究论文,
or doing a PhD on attachments or parting from the attachments then that's one type of motivation. 
或正在做关于”贪执或远离贪执”的博士研究课题,这也算是一种发心,
Therefore, you will also um hear accordingly. 
那么,你将会据此来听闻。
If you are here because you think that probably some of these mahayana teachings might act as a therapeutic help then,
假如你在这里,是因为你认为某些大乘教法可能会有些治疗性质的帮助,
of course, you will also hear accordingly um, according to that kind of desire. 
当然,你也自然会相应地依据那种愿望来听闻。
This is quite e...essential even though when we whenever we talk about tuning the motivation we kind of assume ourself that we do have the right motivation or intention. 
这相当重要,虽然当我们无论何时谈到调整发心时,我们都或多或少假定自己确实具有正确的发心或意图。
This is something that you might like to pay some attention because it is the motivation or intention that also generates different kinds of expectation. 
这是你可能需要稍微留心一下的,因为(不同的)动机或目的也会形成不同的期望。
For instance, if you are going through some kind of a trauma in your life,
举例来说,假如你正经历生活中的某种痛苦,
let's say you are suffering insomnia and, because of that, you are wanting some kind of ah escape. 
比如说你正在饱受失眠之苦,这使得你想要某种逃避,
You want to numb your emotions. 
你想要麻痹你的情感,
And then you come here to receive these teachings,
然后你来这里接受这些教法,
probably its not going to help your insomnia.
这大概对你的失眠不会有什么帮助,
Probably it might not even help your depression. 
甚至可能对你的沮丧都不会有所帮助。
And then this might disappoint you and then all your effort that you have dedicated for coming here may be a waste and you may be utterly disappointed. 
接着,这可能会让你感到失望,于是你为了来这里所做的一切努力,可能变成一种浪费,你可能会彻底失望。
But, at the same time, if you have a motivation of really wishing to understand the infinite, vast and infinite mahayana path and gradually, at least, begin practicing this mahayana path and then apply it. 
但与此同时, 如果你的发心是为了真正了解广大无边的大乘之道,并且逐渐,或者至少开始修行这个大乘之道,然后实际运用它,
Then that's another d... another case. 
那又是另一回事了。
To put it into nutshell, I'm... I'm telling you these thing...these things because uh probably its my own imagination but I have a small reason here. 

简而言之,我说这些是因为 —— 这可能是我自己的想象 —— 不过我有个小小的理由
Buddhism recently has gained some um good ratings in the medias, looks like. 
近来佛教似乎在媒体上很受好评。
Its con... buddhism is always associated with non-violence. 
佛教总是与非暴力联系在一起,
Buddhism is kind of associated with happiness. 
佛教与快乐有点关系,
If you have a title “Happiness” in...on your book and something to do with Buddhism it's almost guaranteed to be a best-seller. (laughter)  如果你的书名中有「快乐」而且和佛教有关,这本书几乎保证会畅销。(笑声)

So, buddhism, non-violence, happiness are kind of becoming synonymous. 
所以,佛教、非暴力、快乐几乎变成同义词了。

While this is, of course, as a buddhist this is kind of good thing. 
当然,对于佛教徒来说,这是件好事,
It feels good when you are associated with something good, you know. 
你知道的,当你与好东西联系在一起时,总是感觉不错,
Especially in this kind of time where religious fanaticism is so strong. 
特别是在这个宗教狂热主义如此盛行的时候。
At the moment we buddhists are kind of going through the honeymoon period of enjoying this reputation. 
目前我们佛教徒正在经历享受这个声誉的蜜月期,
But this worries me because Buddhism is not to the purpose of Buddhism is not to make you happy and this is very important for un...us [22:17] to understand. 
但是这让我担忧,因为佛教的目的不是为了要让你快乐。我们应该要了解这一点,这非常重要。

Purpose of the ultimate purpose of Buddhism is to go beyond happiness, to achieve enlightenment.  That's the most important. 
佛教的究竟目的是为了要超越快乐、要达到证悟。 那才是最重要的。
Because happiness is very relative. 
快乐是非常相对的。
Watching uh World Wrestling Federation 24 hours can be happiness for some people. 
对某些人来说,二十四小时观看世界摔角联盟(WWF)比赛可以就是快乐。
So, practicing buddhism purely for happiness therefore is not really the ultimate aim. 
所以,纯粹是为了快乐而学佛,这并不是究竟的目标。

And this point is very much made by Manjushri or Sachen Kunga Nyingpo or Jetsun Trakpa Gyaltsen in this text which will be discussed, which we'll be discussing. 
文殊菩萨,或是萨千?贡嘎?宁波,或是杰尊?札巴?蒋称,在我们将要讨论的这个文本里,对于这点说的很清楚。
[23:27](softly: ok, too fast? oh, don't worry about names)  (laughter) 
(仁波切对翻译说:ok,,讲太快了?哦,别担心那些名字。)(笑声)
So, this is why I'm stressing this. 
所以,这就是为什么我再三强调这一点。

Uh it's kind of disheartening to see Buddhism, or anything to do with Buddhism, in the section of self-help and relaxation, aromatherapy. (laughter) 
看到佛教或是有关佛教的书被放在「自我成长」、「心灵放松」、「香熏疗法」等区域中让人有点沮丧。(笑声)
And this is k...for me is a little bit difficult to say because blatantly you can't go against anything to do with peace and loving and smiling and all of that.  Because its in...politically incorrect to go in...against. 
对我而言,说这些有点困难,因为你不能公开反对任何有关和平、爱、微笑等等之类的东西,因为反对这些是政治上不正确的(译注:意指冒犯大众)。

For health we go we enroll ourselves into health clubs for health and vanity reasons I guess. We enroll ourself to health clubs.  We push iron, pull iron, I don't know, run.
我们可能为了身体健康或是虚荣的原因而加入健身会所,把(举重器)铁块推上、拉下和跑步等等,
For s...mental health, ultimately for the mental health, if you come to just for a healthy mind.  Of course, it depends on, depending on motivation for a healthy mind。Strong mind, controlled mind so that you will be a good manager, so that you'll be a good leader.  And you you see all these kinds of books these days. Buddhism.  Management.  Buddhism. 
如果最终是为了心理健康,假如你来这里就是为了要有一个健康的心灵,
当然,这取决于你想要有个健康心灵的动机。一个强壮的心,能掌控的心,以便能成为一个好的经理人,或是好的领导者。近来你可以看到所有这类的书籍,佛教的,管理的。

For this kind of purpose, with this kind of purpose, if you come to buddhism, I cannot say you will be disappointed entirely. 
假如你来亲近佛教是为了这种目的,我不能说你会彻底失望,
I'm sure it will give you, to a certain extent, some answer
我相信,在某种程度上,你会得到一些答案,
but, ultimately, buddhism is not designed for that. 
但是究竟上,佛教不是为此设计的。
Ultimately, buddhism is not designed to be a successful manager. 
究竟上,佛教不是为了要成就一个成功的经理人而设计;
In fact, ultimately, buddhism is to really ruin your career of management. (laughter) 
事实上,佛教最终是要毁灭你的管理生涯。(笑声)

If management and leadership is so important,
要是管理和领导能力如此重要,
Siddhartha would have never left Kapilavastu because he had the greatest opportunity to manage the whole country. 
悉达多就永远不会离开迦毗罗卫,因为他有最好的机会去管理整个国家。
So, I'm telling you these things because we have to have a certain m...certain we have to really you know,
我说这些是因为,我们真的必须有正确的发心,
its easy to say I, you know, we have the right motivation but we should really contemplate on this. 
你知道,这个说来容易,但是我们真的应该好好思维它。
Are we here are we here for are we here to listen to these teachings for the enlightenment? 
我们在这里听闻这些教法,是否真的是为了证悟?
We all like to say “yes” or in anyway its safer to say this way anyway, you know, among the buddhists. [28:17]
我们都想说「是的」,或者身处在佛教徒之中,这么说总是比较安全。
But, even that statement that “I'm here to learn the path of enlightenment.
但是,即使是声称「我在这里是为了学习通往证悟之道」
ah I'm here to listen to the teachings so that I will achieve enlightenment.” 
「我在这里听闻教法,是为了能够获得证悟」,
Even that, even the, even the fact that do you really want to achieve enlightenment.  That is something that you should contemplate. 
甚至于你是不是真的想要证悟,那都是你应当仔细思维的。
I must confess I, for one, I'm not that, I'm not all the time attracted to enlightenment. 
我必须坦承,我自己就不是;我并不是总是想要证悟。
Really.  I'm much more attracted to the samsaric success, the gain, the, I don't know, the influence, the game that we play. 
真的,我更热衷于轮回的成功,获得,影响力,我们玩弄的游戏;
I, you know, I I'm very much for this. 
你知道,我很喜欢这些。
Enlightenment as a romantic notion, the golden color, the light, the omniscience, you know, all of that is fine. 
证悟做为一个浪漫的想法,金色、光芒、遍知一切等等,这些都不错。
And especially when I'm tormented suddenly with a certain problems then, of course, I think about enlightenment.(laughter) 
特别是当我突然被某个问题困扰的时候,当然我会想到证悟。(笑声)
When I'm up in the air and when my plane gets, go through turbulence, then I think about enlightenment.  (laughter) 
当我在天上,突然飞机受到气流影响时,我会想到证悟;(笑声)
As soon as I'm in the...on the ground and surrounded by friends, families, attention, gain, don't think about enlightenment. 

但是当我一落地,被亲朋好友、关注、利得所包围,我就不会去想证悟。
And not only that, sometimes I contemplate and if you really contemplate, enlightenment is a state where you have amazing qualities, supposedly amazing qualities. 
不止是这样,有时候我想,假如你认真思维,证悟是一个境界,你具备不可思议的功德的境界——所谓不可思议的功德。
And from the emotional point of view all these amazing qualities that enlightenment supposed to have such as omniscience,
从情绪化的观点来看,证悟理应具备的所有的这些不可思议的功德,比如全知,
you should really think: do you really want to be omniscient? 
你真的应该想想:你真想要变得无所不知吗?
Because, if you do have omniscience, there will be no surprise. 
因为,假如你真能遍知一切,那就毫无惊喜可言了。
You cannot read one good detective novel. (laughter) 
你不能读一本好的侦探小说(笑声),
You already know the end. 
因为你已经知道结局。

You can't you can't enjoy anything.  You can't enjoy uh a new food. 
你无法享受任何东西。你不能享受新的食物,
You can't taste a new drink because you already know. 
你不能品尝新的饮料,因为你已经知道它们是怎么回事。
You don't you you can't, you know like gossip around,
你不能到处闲聊,
you can't chat uh chat around because you already know the answer. 
你不能四处聊天闲谈,因为你已经知道答案了。
So, from the emotional point of view,
所以,从情绪化的观点来看,
enlightenment is, from our deluded emotional point of view,
从我们染污的情绪化的观点来看,
enlightenment is really, utterly such a boring place where you have no excitement,
证悟真的是个绝对无聊的境地,在那里没有兴奋刺激,
no excitement at all. 
一点都没有。
Why what why do we need this? 
我们为什么需要证悟?
So, this way its quite important to really uh tune our motivation. Uh [??? inaudible 32:20]
所以,我们用这种方式来检视、调整自己的发心,这相当重要。
So, I will I shall remind you th...about motivation every now and then hopefully, hopefully every time I we begin the teaching
因此,我会不时提醒你们发心,希望每次我们开始讲课时(都能提醒要正确发心)。
I mean to myself mainly and then to you also. 
我主要是指提醒我自己,然后也提醒你们。
Now I studied under the amazing guidance of Khenpo Appey Rinpoche almost 5 years. 
我曾在堪布阿贝仁波切令人惊叹的指导下学习了将近五年,
I mainly studied buddhist philosophy. 
主要是学习佛教哲学。
